G20

G20 Summit 2009

Challenge

In the weeks prior to the G20, many media organisations realised that it would be prudent to consider the safety of their crews deploying to a potentially volatile Public Order event. After consideration it was appreciated, due to time constraints, that not all those deploying would be able to receive the same level of training. The scale and diversity of the deployment also meant that not all those on the ground or those deploying them would require the same type of training.

Solution

Prime’s approach to the challenge was to put in place a multi layered option for our clients:

  1. We increased our resources and this enabled us to more than double our capacity for delivery of the standard Public Order course in the available time.
  2. Within a very short time frame a new Public Order refresher course was developed and ready for delivery to those with previous experience and training in public order deployments.  This new course included a module to improve planning skills of deployers.
  3. A presentation covering both the policing and the more extreme protest groups involved in the G20 was included in all sessions.
  4. Where crews were seen to be potentially at high risk, security support was supplied during the event.
  5. Elements of the Prime management team where out on the ground during the event in order to monitor the implementation of training and security support supplied.

Result

With our training and security support, the crews deployed, working more effectively and safely with confidence and the ability to continue operating even as the dramatic events unfolded. The quality of the editorial was also enhanced, as our training and presence gave the crews a better understanding of the events they were witnessing.

world cup 2006

World Cup 2006

Challenge

At Germany 2006, the likely risk of conflict between fans and involving the police was always high. Consequently, pre-event planning identified media crew training as a top priority.

Solution

Prime developed a specific Public Order Safety Awareness course for individuals covering the World Cup with all the usual benefits, enhanced with specially produced information on aspects particular to this World Cup: German police structure and tactics in various areas; locations information; suspected trouble hotspots, and so on.

Result

The result was to give media crews and individuals confidence, enabling them to deliver their work objectively, accurately and on time. Our training achieved this by providing the crews with greater knowledge of what to expect, what to be alert to, and how to act in a manner appropriate to a fast-changing situation.

Travel Safety Course

Challenge

A production company, with an inexperienced production team, was making a programme spanning several countries which would require extensive travel. Dealing with an unknown public, travelling within cities, carrying money and valuable equipment: they needed to be safe.

Solution

Prime devised a bespoke Travel Safety course that highlighted a range of personal safety issues relating to their itinerary, including detailed aspects of how to address customs; societal and political issues; and possible dangers they might face in each city on their route.

Result

The course helped to heighten awareness and therefore reduce risk: it enabled the crew to travel with a greater understanding of what to expect and how to avoid certain dangers.

In addition discussions with our experts’ highlighted aspects of the original planning that required review and adjustment.  This included changes to the safety arrangements for the senior production staff during their recces.

Even with your self-completed risk assessment and safety plan, this assignment clearly proves the need to seek expert advice.

sky sports news

Sky Sports News security support

Challenge

Football fans are not known for their restraint, and journalists trying to conduct match day interviews know this only too well. Sky Sports News crews had suffered a couple of incidents, distracting them from their task and making them feel very vulnerable to physical assault. This was compounded by the inadequacies of the security support they had contracted. Prime were asked to review the situation and offer a resolution to the problems and instil confidence.

Solution

We supplied selected top quality security operatives with extensive knowledge of the media and the task in hand to provide a level of service that would refocus the crews on the effective delivery of match day reporting.

Result

With this initiative having regenerated confidence in the individuals and the team dynamic, the Sky Sports News crews are now happy to report from potentially volatile situations. For Sky, the advantages are clear: with the reassurance that appropriate safety measures are in place, the quality of their crews’ work is significantly improved, and consequently the quality of their broadcasting.

The success of this initial response has lead both Sky Sports News and Sky News to use Prime’s security services extensively in the UK and overseas.
